As the leaves turn and the hum of combines and tractors fills the fields, harvest season is in full swing across our rural communities.
At Ergo Bank, we’re proud to support the hardworking farmers who keep Wisconsin thriving, and we’re just as committed to keeping everyone safe on the road during this busy time of year.
Whether you drive through farm country daily or just on weekends, these harvest season safety tips can help prevent accidents and protect lives as large farm equipment hits the road.
Why Harvest Season Requires Extra Caution on the Road
During harvest season, farmers move between fields using public roads, often with:
- Slow-moving vehicles (SMVs) like combines, grain carts, or tractors
- Equipment that may take up multiple lanes
- Unexpected turns into field driveways or barns
Most farm equipment travels under 25 mph, and accidents can happen fast if drivers aren’t prepared. A vehicle going 55 mph will cover a football field’s length in just 5 seconds, not enough time to react if you’re not paying attention.
Every year, preventable crashes occur between drivers and farm vehicles. A little extra caution goes a long way.
7 Harvest Road Safety Tips for Drivers
Here are some important reminders to help keep everyone, including farmers, safe on rural roads this fall:
1. Slow Down Sooner Than You Think
If you spot a slow-moving vehicle in the distance, ease off the gas right away. Farm equipment can appear farther away than it actually is. Remember that it often moves under 25 mph. Give yourself time and space to react.
2. Stay Back and Give Space
Tailgating is dangerous, especially when the vehicle in front weighs several tons. Large equipment needs more time to stop or turn. Keep a safe following distance to avoid rear-end collisions.
3. Don’t Assume You Can Pass Safely
That tractor veering to the right? It may be setting up for a wide left turn. Always check for hand signals or turn indicators — and never pass unless you’re absolutely certain it’s safe and legal.
4. Only Pass in Legal, Open Areas
Wait for clear, straight stretches of road with enough visibility. Never pass near hills, curves, field driveways, intersections, or railroad crossings.
5. Be Extra Alert Near Field Entrances
Expect farm equipment to turn suddenly into narrow or hidden field access points. These don’t always look like driveways, but they’re used often during harvest.
6. Keep an Eye Out Near Grain Elevators and Co-ops
Busy spots like grain bins, co-ops, and auction barns tend to attract slowdowns and farm traffic. Stay alert and reduce your speed in these areas.
7. Remember: Farmers Are Your Neighbors
That combine driver is likely someone you know, or at least someone you’ve waved to in town. Behind the wheel of that equipment is a person trying to finish a long day’s work and get home safely, just like you.
